Sunshine Newsletter for November 2021

Jetstar has sold international flights from Cairns to Tokyo and Osaka again. Our borders not only between states but also internationally would be open soon. Hopefully, your study efforts will be rewarded on your next Japan trip, and your learning journey will be more colourful.

Workshop & Kōryū-kai (gathering) :

We will have a workshop and Kōryū-kai at the beginning of December. It is announced here, as it would be too late on the Newsletter for December.

The topic is Japanese new year decoration making. Japanese people still keep traditional decorations to welcome a happy new year. In this workshop, we will make those Japanese decorations, although we have limited materials for them.

I haven’t fully checked the materials yet, so the fee hasn’t been fixed yet. However, it will be within the range as below.

Please ask me for further information and let me know if you are interested.

I look forward to your participation. RSVP: 13th June

Time: 1:00 pm, Saturday, 4th December

Place: Sunshine Japanese classroom

Fee: $15-30

Oshaberi Club:

Oshaberi club (where you can practice your Japanese conversational skills with other participants who are interested in a certain topic) comprising two groups, one being elementary to pre-intermediate and the other being intermediate or higher. Please feel free to jump in and enjoy this fun challenge.

***GROUP 1: Intermediate or higher*** We have been practising the situation conversation for a couple of months. The conversation catch-ball is getting better and better. In reality, you won’t make a big speech in Japanese. Just tell what you are seeing and what you think about it, that’s it. This practice has worked well so far. I will get a video for the next and we can try it for the next Oshaberi. Enjoy chatting!

Time: 1:00 pm, Saturday, 27th November

***GROUP 2: Elementary to pre-intermediate*** Don’t hesitate, and just give a go! Let’s talk about your most previous trip to Japan, what you like, what you didn’t like, tell us what was interesting, fun, cool or new that you discovered. Bring some photos, prints, gift (Omiyage), trinket, anything that you brought back from your travels and let’s chat about it this Oshaberi club. Please come and join us.

Time: 3:00 pm, Saturday, 27th November

For both groups, please book your attendance so that I can organise the groups. Try to book at the earliest time to reserve your spot as you don’t want to miss out.

Place: Sunshine Japanese

Fee: $30

Children of the Sea (海獣の子供)

Registrations: https://jffau.net/Cairns21_COSAM

2019 / Youth, Animation / 111 mins / Rating: PG (contains mild fantasy themes and infrequent coarse language)

In Japanese with English subtitles

"Most of the things that happen at sea are left unknown…"

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn towards the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and can hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. What the children experience as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish is only the beginning of a surreal and colourful adventure that will lead Ruka to find her role within the great unitedness of humanity and nature.

Born Bone Born (洗骨)

Registrations: https://jffau.net/Cairns21_BBB

2018 / Drama / 111 mins / Rating: Unclassified: 15+

In Japanese with English subtitles

"A dysfunctional family comes together for an unorthodox Okinawan tradition"

Four years after Emiko’s death, her family reunites for an Okinawan funerary ritual known as a senkotsu (bone washing) ceremony. Since her death, her husband has become an alcoholic and her daughter is heavily pregnant and single. Nothing’s been easy for this family, and now they are forced to deal with each other’s problems too. Born Bone Born is beautifully strange and universally human, taking a melancholic story and spinning it into a light-hearted, comedic drama about how family will always be there for you—even if they have to be dragged, kicking and screaming.
