Sunshine Newsletter for May 2021

Have you heard ‘Golden week’ for Japanese holidays? Japan has some public holidays from the end of April until the beginning of May; therefore, they could have 1-week holidays, including weekends. We usually have a lot of Japanese tourists in Cairns during ‘Golden week’. We just need to be patient until the border is open.

Workshop & Kōryū-kai (gathering) :

We had a Boku-ga art workshop last month. It was the first time to have a guest who is a teacher for Boku-ga art. We have an aim of workshop, which is to improve your knowledge and grow your confidence to apply for a variety of activities in Japan. However, it won’t be soon when we visit Japan. For a meantime, I would like to organise some activities for our workshop. If you have any ideas or requests, please let me know. For that activity, the cost won’t be fixed and will depend on the material cost. If you could understand that point, I am much appreciated.

The next workshop & kōryū-kai will be held in June.

Oshaberi Club:

Oshaberi club (where you can practice your Japanese conversational skills with other participants who are interested in a certain topic) comprising two groups, one being elementary to pre-intermediate and the other being intermediate or higher. Please feel free to jump in and enjoy this fun challenge.

***GROUP 1: Intermediate or higher*** This month, we will have the same activity one more time, which is explaining a rough story of TV drama series. Last month, the members did it much better than the previous time and found the best way of utilising this activity to improve their vocabulary and speech. Excellent!

Time: 1:00 pm, Saturday, 15th May

***GROUP 2: Elementary to pre-intermediate*** Don’t hesitate, and just give a go! Let’s talk about your most previous trip to Japan, what you like, what you didn’t like, tell us what was interesting, fun, cool or new that you discovered. Bring some photos, prints, gift (Omiyage), trinket, anything that you brought back from your travels and let’s chat about it this Oshaberi club. Please come and join us.

Time: 3:00 pm, Saturday, 15th May

For both groups, please book your attendance so that I can organise the groups. Try to book at the earliest time to reserve your spot as you don’t want to miss out.

News corner:

100 native Japanese speakers have answered the Sunshine questionnaires!

Sunshine Japanese have conducted surveys 3 times so far. Each result was open on the Sunshine Japanese podcast ‘Yasashii Nihon-go radio’. Now, you can check all the results on the website. The first question was when they switch over from ‘ohayo’ to ‘konnichiwa’. The second was which one they say ‘arigato gozaimasu’ or ‘sumimasen’ especially to strangers. The latest one was whether they use 'anata', the word for you in Japanese to refer to their friends. Those would be interesting for you. Check them out!

*This is just one information I can share with you. It’s not a fair survey because people who answered are only my friends or friends of my friends.
